Well I think the truth is somewhere between cartoonish as you you put it, and realism. What the film didn`t show, but Tolkien had written is that some of the animals talked like the eagles, thats goto take the hard edge off the realism don`t you think...thanks for dropping in...

Your style of painting characters is almost cartoonish. Many of the concepts taken from LOTR is, to say the least, very different as imagined and written by Tolkien. Not to my taste, but well painted.

Cheers Allen...I still got to develop them further, but at least there different from Peter Jacksons...

I love your orcs....they are very well done.

At this time in the story, the men of Rohan were just patrolling there borders and came across the Orcs, so in my minds eye I imagined them to only be lightly armour...thanks for dropping in

It's a nice picture, but I also think that the riders look like savage, not like an army. Respect.

I got to admit that theres a little of post work over the top of this one Bill...

Thanks Jeff!..I absorbed quite a lot of classical artwork in young days, and it`s quite evidend in the composition, not that I plan it that way,I just unconsciously regurgitated it... thanks for dopping in Jeff..

i really appreciate your very personal take on jrr's cornerstone work. this is a very nice piece - like heroic romantic pics of the last century. perfect for the subject matter. excellent light/dark thematic separation of the opposing forces.

yes he`s is a bit low, that makes him almost part of the horse, and I quite like that...

veinglory's picture

Very dramatic, but the rider seems to be sitting a bit low on the horse -- lie he has no nether regions?

Hi Tiina... nobody can be as bad as I am, for putting thing off until another time....it will be a while before I upload anything new...the saying..."procrastination is the thief of time" should be tattoo onto my forehead..haha!

Hiya! Min..yes realism was sacrificed, in as much as the whole picture was paint without any reference, and the composition was layed down in one go on the final artwork..so there were more than a few mistakes....since then I`ve reworked it a little bit in Photoshop, and corrected & inhanced some of the more outstanding errors...

Guest's picture

it looks like .... almost like the early american paitings and woodcuts that sacrificed a little realism in favor of drama, movement and documentation. Gives this a wonderfully authentic feel.

Cheers Socar!..thanks for visiting...

Love it! The lighting is beautiful, and I really love all the action you've got into it. Even the deaders' poses are dynamic!

Great stuff!

frodo's picture

thanks Min... I had the Idea of having a white horse caught by a ray of light, and the rider in his full bloom of his young life in exhortation for battle...I wouldn`t mind doing a better version this, maybe a close up of just horse and rider...

minsookchan's picture

Very beautiful scene. The horse is graceful, beautiful.

Yes Anneth, but what I didn`t realise that the attack on the Orc happened at dawn, under a flaming red sky,....just show you can`t aways trust your memory.

...so THAT'S what happens in the beginning of the third book...heh heh heh...weeee!!!! 8D

frodo's picture

Thanks Ian...I`ve digitally worked over the original watercolour, to make it a little more dramatic...

Guest's picture
