Artwork Description

This product was to take place in underground stone caverns, so I got a lot of reference material on caves and caverns. It was a blast painting it all!

The face of Firiona, the main character, was quite a challenge. I had to stay "on model" but had no access to the original model used on previous covers. Also, she had never been painted from this angle before! After a couple of false starts, I finally ended up painting her face in PhotoShop so I could get approval from the client without having to paint then photograph the painting and send it. Once the P.S. version was approved, I copied it in paint here. Much easier than multiple painted versions.

Thanks! Believe it or not, I used a tiny little brush! Also, a magnifying glass for the very small details - no sense in going blind... Smile

how did you draw those tiney little eyes?

megaflow's picture

Thanks! You know, when I did this piece, they sent me a box with the actual costume for that character, which they use for conventions. I was able to dress my model in it and took reference photos for accuracy. Much fun!

Thanks, Alexandra - it's nice that a fan appreciates it! Truthfully, I've sort of lost touch with them because I've been rather busy, but thanks for reminding me. Smile

Wow- well my comment really is late but this is great!
I played Everquest for a long time, and I always loved especially Firiona, no highelf looked THAT good in the game =)

Thx for showing this fabulous piece of art!

Will you do artworks for Everquest 2?

megaflow's picture

Thanks! That's always good thing Smile

Thanks, Angelica - stop by anytime (but remember I'm a crappy role model!).

Guest's picture

Wow thats so kool!!! Its like bad a@@!! Heck I cant even trace! ^_^ Oh well ur my rolemodel now! ^_^

megaflow's picture

Thanks, Laura! I'm glad a fan of the game appreciates the likeness (difficult, as I mentioned!) I still hold out hope they'll use this someday for SOMETHING, if they don't forget they have it around...

I can only echo what others have said about the piece. I played Everquest for two years and a lot of my inspiration comes from the character Fironia Vi...you depicted her just beautifully. I can just imagine how difficult the face was! I would have loved to see this on the cover of one of the Everquest boxes, the detail is just exquisite.

megaflow's picture

Oh, yeah - an actual box for a big project they worked on for over a year - then cancelled at the last minute! Ugh! I put the whole story in the notes for this one: http://home.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/view.pl?id=26445 (Including which were my designs and which were others!) This product was going to be called "Kingdom of Stone" - did they mention that one while you were there? So, no coicidence - I was working from screen shots of the characters in the game!

wow, weird....Patrick, up until a year ago, I worked on the game Everquest as an artist (specifically, Scars of Velious and Shadows of Luclin)...a lot of the leather and armor outfits you see running around are mine! Was that for an actual EQ box or something?

megaflow's picture

I'm touched that you would take the time to say so, Gwynn. Glad I could help! Stay in touch.

I have to say, thanks a million for this. When I saw the red light flowing in from that back cavern, I realized where I had to take my Drow Assassin's background composition. You're an inspiration and a great help to learning artists!

megaflow's picture

Well, just between us, Eden... Wink I am generally a bit looser and more "painterly" in my approach, and I was asked to work a little "tighter" here so the cover would have a bit of a Parkinson flavor. I guess it worked! (Though I'm not nearly as photographic as he - my colors are always brighter and less strictly realistic, for a start...).

eden-celeste's picture

You know, it actually took me a moment to realize that this wasn't a Parkinson piece (didn't read the signature I guess). Not sure if that is a compliment to you or not, but he's a favorite artist of mine... Anyway, way cool that you did this art piece! I have lost soooo much good art time in this game. LOL

megaflow's picture

Appreciated, Dan. I really worried about pulling all the disparate colors together on this piece. That's part of why the distant caves all have different colored "glows" coming out of them - to echo colors of the characters and balance things out. Glad you liked it!

Great use of color, Patrick. I also really like the composition.

Aha! Thought so! thanks!

Very good Socar... very good..............

Thanks very much, Marley! It was photographed to an 8" x 10" transparency (and it was hard to find someone who specializes in that size and doesn't charge an arm and a leg!) then the transparency was scanned. This seems to get the best quality for me, so I do it on all my paintings (usually a smaller transparency, though).

thrax-1's picture

certainly one of the most amazingly clear paintings ive evr seen on epilogue.was it scanned or photographed?
owell congratulations on getting the editors pick aswell.Smile.definitely one of my favourites in your gallery.

Thank you, Paata!

Thanks, Stan! I took a lot of care to get a sense of cavernous space, so I'm glad it was noticed by a fine artist like yourself.

Art at its best.
