Artwork Description

I guess this could go either way - SF or Horror - but the way this came out reminded me a bit of Hannes Bok, so Science Fiction it is! Of course, this is based on the Lovecraft mythos, and it's for the Call of Cthulhu CCG.

Michele, I'm afraid I don't own the rights to this image - you would have to contact Fantasy Flight Games here in the U.S. Thanks!

Hello, I'm Michele from Italy. I ask whether you would with your permission you can use this image of Shub-Niggurath in the depiction on the cover for the CD of my band.to contact us at

Thank you! I was thinking that the name was metaphorical, since she's more cloud-like anyway. Also, I thought it would be cool if EVERYTHING on this world is bathed in a slickly blood-red light, so there's really no color specifically here, if that helps. Smile I'm glad you looked - thanks again.

That one looks awesome, the landscape is very beautiful- But she is red on that pic. As far as I know she is called "The Black Goat With A Thousand Young" So it feels weird that she is red. Anyway astounding work!

How funny - I just noticed that my original comment on the picture mentioned Hannes Bok as well. I'm nothing of not consistent, even four years later! Wink

Thanks! I was really quite happy with this when I did it, because I have often felt the Science Fiction aspect of Lovecraft is sadly overlooked. I wanted to do something in the vein of pulp SF artist Hannes Bok, but of course with some of that great Lovecraftian weird horror as well. Glad you liked it.

Beautiful! I actually have the COC card with this painting, it's one of my favorites. I love the mixture of solid tentacles and mouths with the cloud-like, insubstantial-looking body. The red is a great choice, it does make it look like a scene on an alien world, and the rocky spires are a nice touch. Shub-Niggurath is sadly neglected in the Mythos, and you portray her well.
IA! Shub-Niggurath!

Thanks Guest. I liked the idea of a blood-red planet with faintly green skies for this one. I was trying to play up the very Science-Fictiony aspect of Shub. (People don't often notice how much of Lovecrafts world was Sci-Fi based, but it really was).

this is the only art of Shub-niggurath (as
far as i can tell) that shows her as a cloud-like entity like h.p lovecraft described her as (only once in a letter to a Willis Conover ) but red is not the color i imagine her to be more of a Orange ish color i think.

Thanks!! Far, far, far from rich though. If I wanted to make money I'd be a... well, anything but an artist. Smile But then I wouldn't have nice comments like yours, which are better than money, sometimes.

Nice work man u should be rich by now if u sold that and all the others.
The senery really pops things out and the colours WOW!!

Simply astounding, do you have a larger image of this?

Ia! Ia!

Thanks as always Uwe - you might be interested to know that the reference I used for the toothy mouths was a closeup photo of a moray eel. Those things look alien when you zoom in!

Nice one Patrick, this one really appeals to me (as most of your art does). I like the nostalgic atmosphere you've created here.

Hey, thanks, Steven! I love to evoke that old-time feel - I think I was born 40 years too late sometimes...

Now that's what i call From Beyond! Excellent work man. I love the 60's pulp sf cover atmosphere you've conjured up here.

Thanks Andreas - it's always nice to hear from you. Glad you liked it!

Awesome, i love the colours and that crazy landscape!

megaflow's picture

Eugene - how nice of you to say! I enjoyed the chance to do this one; I've often found Lovecraft to be a great combination SF/Horror writer, and this was a chance to interpret my impressions of that.

This is great! I'm a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft! Everything about it feels right.

Art at its best.
