Gorgeous! It's watercolor but very opaque. Don't know how you get this effect.

reply to one of the comments below: the artist who does the years best fantasy book covers is Thomas Canty.

the colors seem more pronounced than in most of your other works... I like it... Smile naturally, a good picture like this will be liked by just about everyone... I would like to see you try experimenting with a bolder color scheme... but then, that's a personal preference, and I'm best ignored... Tongue
good work, and keep it up!

HeHeHe! I used to teach. I work in a glazing technique, so my watercolors get very saturated. It took me hundreds of allnighters & plenty of nodos to develope my work to this point. My pieces take anywhere from 2 to 35 hours. I like to work fast to keep the emotion in the painting.

Exquisite craftsmanship and great control over the medium! Man, I wish you were my illustration teacher, Laughing out loud I'm very interested as to how you keep the purity of your whites (I'm still a watercolor novice, probably will be forever, heh heh) and how long it takes you to finish an illustration?

Thank you, Sara.

Thank you for the kind words & compliments.

I've made LOTS of mistakes through the years & have developed a technique that I really like working with. I LOVE color & I don't use any black in my watercolors. Black often daedens color.

Hello Kevin. Thank you for the compliment. I'm happy to be a part of the Epilogue community (GREAT ARTISTS!)

I'm glad you enjoy this piece. I'm not familiar with the artist who does the Year's Best Sci-Fi & Fantasy books. I was inspired mostly by Parrish & Rackham. Best Wishes!

Your talent with watercoulrs is incredible. This is what I hope to achieve while dabbling in this impressive medium. Very inspirational work. Truly remarkable.

James, your work is a welcome addition to Epilogue. Watercolors have always intimidated me, but you master them well.

Magnificent! It reminds me alot of the artist who draws the covers for the Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy book series...such a magical style, full of fantastical details and yet soft at the same time. I'm speechless. Laughing out loud

This beautiful piece is my favourite in your absolutely gorgeous gallery James, wonderful work, very accomplished and imaginative. Top quality. Am I right in thinking this figure is Enigma from the illustrators ref?
