Artwork Description

I was challenged by my mother to do a Halloween witch. She wanted it to be sexy but threatening... I don’t know how well I’ve succeeded there, but it was a lot of fun doing it.

Dear Chris,

I love your art gallery. I have a very small start-up company that is called Trine Moon, and every time I think of the name Trine Moon I visualize this picture that I can't get out of my head. Your gallery shows much of the style that I am looking for ... what I would like to use on my store website if I am able, but even more so - I want this image to hang on my wall. How much do you charge for an origional creation, copy righted to you and owned by you to do with what you like - I just want my vision to come to life.

I will try to describe what I am wanting, and I am by no means an artist, but I have sort of outlined this image that I could fax you if you like. Anyway, here goes with the description:

Basically, it is a forest at night... under a full moon. The trees are somewhat like dryads, but not exactly as I have seen them rendered elsewhere. I want the trees to be women whose bodies form the trunks of the trees and whose legs turn into roots, and with arms that turn into full branches, rather than a woman coming out of a tree. I imagine the trees/women to be very sexy (realisticly sexy - soft) but more concerned with worship of the moon and watching over the forest than being seductive. I

Hey I just wanted to say I really love the colors you use in your drawings.

Guest's picture

wow, thats amazing! I love it! You are absolutley amazing when it comes to pencil work. You have quite a talent. My favorite is the hat. If i had one like that i would wear it every day. Anyway, keep up the amazing! work Smile

Being pagan myself, I'm always intrigued to see renditions of witches. You get kind of tired of seeing your religious preferences drawn as green, wrinkled old hags with big warts on their noses! This piece is beautiful. I would absolutely LOVE to see you do a piece with a witch riding her broomstick

Awsome, I love all your stuff. Have you ever considered drawing a couple of vampires?! I think youd be very good at them!
(i always use wierd names when i post something-call it insanity!)

Thanks Billy!

The cat is stragely threatening, the witch is definately sexy -- so overall... yes.

chrisxavier's picture

You are right indeed. I have just recently started drawing animals and this cat has unfortunately got a bit stiff. I wanted it to be a bit scary-looking and on its guard but I think I might have been too aggressive with my pencil. After using the scanner a pencil-drawing (I suppose it's similar with other media too) tends to be a bit off in brightness and contrast. That is easily corrected with most graphics programs. I use very much contrast when I draw so normally I have to make changes for the digital version to actually look like the original.

Well done - you did exactly what your mother asked you to do.
However, the cat has a visage of slight stiffness to it. It just doesn't appear as elegant as the woman does. The cat is drawn well, but I think you outlined a little too much around the neck, head and (the cat's) left forepaw. That slight outline deters from the fact that it is a beautiful, sleek cat and makes it appear more of just a lined drawing. However, your shading is wonderful, and everything else is near perfect. That cat-thing just caught my eye.
Oh, you do enhance the shading on your drawings on the computer once you've scanned them, do you not?

It's very good to hear that Ekatrina. You write so sweet comments, thank you.

I think I prefer the seducive pictures of you but this was very well done. The texture and everything. Love how you are going on with your animal drawings. Changes the picture so much when you got a furry animal added on. Again very well done. Like the moon too.

I have received so many splendid comments from you during the time here at Epilogue so I am proud to say you are in my personal "Hall of fame" Cynthia. Thank you, again!

chrisxavier's picture

Sweet sister, how happy you make me feel by your generous words. It wants me to go give you a big hug. ~Bro

Thank you Christine, constructive criticism is the only way to ever grow as an artist.

chrisxavier's picture

I'm pleased you liked her Duc. Many thanks.

If I were to mention one person on Epilogue with a pencil-technique that I truly envy, it would be you Steve. Therefore your comment means a great deal to me. Thank you!

chrisxavier's picture

I'm just glad you requested it!

This is my favourite in your gallery so far - it's well-rendered and nicely composed, and I like the badass guardcat!

Nice witch. She is sexy and the cat is definitely threatening. Good work.

griffingirl's picture

Very cool! My only criticism is her top lip...she needs more of one. But the rest rocks!

Guest's picture

Excellent rendering Chris...I especially love the torn fishnets and her besom. The textures are wonderful.

Charming witch, well done,ChrisX

Nice job on this "Seductive" more than "Threatening" witch. She can cast her spell on me anytime.

Wonderful "Sepiatone" too.

Steve

Art at its best.
