Hes not human lol

really ...cool

Major props for presenting Sauron in one of his earlier guises. Many don't realize he had many forms.
I personally imagine this one to be him when he was a conquering Lord of Middle Earth before his stint as deceiver in Numenor and long before he lost his ability to appear as a 'normal' (but very tall) human.

This is really a nice piece. Ive read a little about sauron and I always wanted to see his face revealed. Actually there is a deleted scene on LOTR return of the king apendix of sauron without the helmet... (on the extended edition ofc.)

Guest's picture

i think its morgoth not souron

Guest's picture

I love this picture
thankyou for giving us a picture of what Sauron would of looked like when he was the Lt of Angband and servant of Morgoth

Nicely done

One of the things that bothered me about Lord of the Rings is the paucity of description of Sauron's physical being. This seems to me like a reasonable representation.

Guest's picture

I can honestly say I don't think Ive seen Sauron depicted this well before. Youre picture seems to capture the terrible presence and majesty of Sauron without making him appear as a "monster". This is I feel a more accurate reflection of his power as one of the Maia and very true to the descriptions of Sauron that Tolkien provided.

thats such a kickass drawing. and for everyone thats all like " hes too human blah blah blah " hes a hill giant and hill gianta are much like humans

Guest's picture

I like the way you pictured Sauron it is very creepy. When I was reading The Lord of the Rings I got a nice picture of Sauron and he looked exactly as you portray him...keep up the good work and I would like to see more of your art in the future

Guest's picture

Having somewhat of a little obsession as a fantasy artist myself, I must admit this is very much how I pictured Sauron in his earlier incarnations. Well done!

thrax-1's picture

i certainly agree with your vision of sauron,he has the look of 'Andreas Katsulas's character g'kar from Babylon 5.was kinda hoping for this vision in the movie, but that vision aint so bad either. gj

Yeah man, what a vison! He looks old, smart and pure....evil! He He. Great work here, that goes for the rest of your pics as well!

rambismds's picture

yeah thats pure evil right there. Thats really wicked.

Guest's picture

What a lovely Sauron! Evil, yes - yet suggesting the beauty and power of a Maia.

Guest's picture

i think it's great that u got the balls to show saurons face. it really makes u crap your pants, doesn't it.. Smile he looks so evil, that he could just as well be morgoth himself.. Smile tässä on munaa!! Smile

ddoved's picture

very beautiful color scheme. powerful work! keep it up!

Guest's picture

The face is really compelling...as are the colors.
I guess, with the face, you wonder what secrets lie in it...

Guest's picture

oh hell yeah he is wicked awsome

Guest's picture

wow... that pic is very impressive! He looks EVIL! I don't think I've ever had an impression of what sauron looks like, but you've helped me with that! *laughs* Thanks a lot! -ingrid-

työsi tekevät todella kunniaa Tolkienin maailmalle.erinomaista värien hallintaa.kuvasta voi tuntea Sauronin vihan huokuvan.

neofotistos's picture

he's a powerful figure. I think I imagined Him like this when I was reading LOTR at the age of 12. later on, I came to think him as the flaming eye

Guest's picture

Woah. You really did it with this one. The power of this picture is awesome. I love the way you captured the evil glare, hidden almost completly by his dark visage. Great pic...top notch work. I may not know anything about actual artwork, but i know this is a great pic.

In the First and Second age, Sauron assumed a beautiful humanoid form, which probably helped getting him accepted by the elves of Eregion and the men of Númenor. With his physical destruction at the fall of Númenor, he lost his ability to take a pleasing shape.

We are not given very much information about his looks in the Lord of the Rings, except Gollum's statement that he has nine fingers.

In Letter 246, Tolkien gives a short description: "Sauron should be thought of as very terrible. The form he took was that of a man of more than human stature, but not gigantic. In his earlier incarnation [before the fall of Númenor] he was able to veil his power (as Gandalf did) and could appear as a commanding figure of great strength of body and supremly royal demeanour and countenance."

Guest's picture

This is a great pic both in its emotion and arwork! If Sauron would be human-like that could very well be what he looked like.
By the way, Sauron, being a maia, doesn't mean he would look like a human, even in the earlier years. Balrogs were of the maiar, too.

timovihola's picture

Being one of the Maiar (like Gandalf), Sauron has undoubtebly had a very human-like form before and possibly during the First Age. He has changed shape a number of times, for example at the time the Rings of Power were forged, he'd be disguised so that the Elves who were forging the rings wouldn't suspect anything.

I didn't want to make a picture of Sauron ín his full armor in the Siege of Barad-dûr or as an burning eye like in the movie, but rather concentrate on what his character might've looked like in the earlier years.

Holy Moly! This is good!
I love your art oh my goodness I love it. aaa ohhh eeee love it.

I have been checking out your gallery since you joined. I just love the way your digital work is very traditional looking. The colors and the lighting you use is just very powerful. The charater and costume design on this one is particularly impressive.

Art at its best.
