Artwork Description

My first real character design.
Here is a bit of the background story of this character:

Bularb - The Merciful

One would think that after 237 years of service in the Golard Army one would be so hardened by the horrors of war as to lose all respect for life. But for Bularb, the opposite is true. Lucky is the warrior who is captured by his armies, as they are usually treated with respect and in full accordance with the warrior code most of his comrades have abandoned over time.

He has received the scorn of his superiors and fellow leaders many times, always because of his leniency and respectful treatment of those who surrender to his troops. But his successes and conquests make him too valuable an asset to dismiss. All who fight under him have the utmost respect for Bularb, and all would not think twice about giving their life for him. If anything, this is exactly what might in the end prove to be his downfall, as many within the council are beginning to see his growing popularity, both in the civilian ranks and in those of the army, as a threat to their jobs.

37 years have passed since he was meant to retire, but the needs brought upon by a seemingly endless conflagration, have given him the excuse he needed to remain in service. He would never admit it, but the main reason behind his stay is actually his feeling that in more ways than one, he is a sign of hope for his kind, and he must do whatever it takes to prevent what he calls 'the beast within' from consuming all of his people.

Very nice treatment of the character, lovely subtle color palette choices, and great suggested skin textures. I see how you chose to treat this work as a portrait. Do I detect a Wayne D. Barlowe as an influence?

His armor is really interesting like a copper pot, or summat. I also like the texture and color of his skin...nice contrast to that little beady eye.

Interestin' story and character here! He looks creepy, but now that I read your description, he looks aged and wise. He doesn't seem as ornate or elaborate as a high-ranked military officer would be, but that makes this character unique. Great drawing! I can't wait to see more of this stuff!

Art at its best.
