Artwork Description

My version of the Celtic myth "The Green Man". Most depictions by other artists only show him as a disembodied head, so I wanted to portray him as a complete being set in his natural habitat.
Done entirely with Photoshop.

I'm new here at Epilogue, and have been browsing around different artists' galleries--yours is definitely going to go into my 'favorites' listing Smile This is an awesome version of the GreenMan!! Love the colors, the softness of the palette and the detail in this wonderful work!

Really nice detail and a lovely composition - good stuff John. I really like the leaf detail on the green man.

Wow, thanks Kay... comments like that (from such an accomplished painter as yourself) really makes one's day! Sorry I beat you to it, but you should still do a full bodied Green Man piece, if for no other reason than to show all of us how to do it right Wink

Wonderful version of the Green man. I often thought of doing him myself full body from all the Greenman heads. I am glad you beat me to the punch. This is excellent and well rendered. Love the soft green.

Thanks Bill. Yep, there's no brush 'magic' for that grass, it was all done with single strokes layered from back to front. But you're no stranger to that technique yourself, so I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. Btw, nice b&w work you've been doing lately... kudos to you, sir Smile

Hi John, really nice work. That grass looks as if you drew each and every blade (now tell me you did!). I really like the composition and the way you've rendered this - great detail.

Thank you, Christine. Animals aren't really my specialty, so I had to use a ton of references! I'm glad you like them Smile

Your kudos is quite appreciated, Christopher. Funny thing is, the composition came very easily and the anatomy was minor trouble. The most time spent on this piece was getting the contrast and color to pop (which I'm still not happy with, but my photoshop skills only go so far). This is the last time I try using a muted palette.

Nice balance and consistency of strokes throughout, great composition, color, and arrangement. Great details. I really like your choice of subject matter, and your finished body design of the Green Man. Excellent anatomy work.
