Thanks Bryan,
That's what they are, darker cooler masses.
I used 3DMAX to light a sphere primative mapped with a painting I did of the lava flows mapped onto it and shot it with a camera to get the angle I wanted. Then I took a TGA of that image into PS6 and painted away on the wacom.

Awesome image! I particularly like the rivulets of lava that are visible between the 'continental-like' masses of cooler lava(if that's what that represents anyway). gives a good impression of what the protoearth might have looked like then. I'm curious as to what program/s you used. Nice job!
