Artwork Description

'Prince Prospero was happy and dauntless and sagacious. When his dominions were half depopulated, he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light-hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired to the deep seclusion of one of his castellated abbeys. This was an extensive and magnificent structure, the creation of the prince's own eccentric yet august taste. A strong and lofty wall girdled it in. This wall had gates of iron. The courtiers, having entered, brought furnaces and massy hammers and welded the bolts. They resolved to leave means neither of ingress or egress to the sudden impulses of despair or of frenzy from within.' - Edgar Allan Poe, 'Masque of the Red Death'

Lorna - this came out fabulous - I love it! Perfect piece for Poe.

The embroidered detail on his jacket is a magnificent touch, and I love the line work on the thing (boulder? tree trunk?) that he's leaning on, as well as the trees in the background. And the castle reminds me of these sand castles I used to make on the beach when I was little where I just let wet sand drip through my fingers.

thanks Laura! I'm afraid the composition of this painting is still a bit stiff but I am trying to do better with the color harmony - going for that "old feeling" Smile

thank you Smile you recognized the resemblance - my Prince Prospero is a combination of the guy from The Pianist and this guy Alex in my French class - it makes a weird combination of a face that's for sure...

Very incredible picture for an incredible story. He kinda reminds me of that guy from the Pianist..wossname...Laughing out loud I really like the delicate handling of the planes of his face and hands, really nice work. His pallid skin tone really echoes what his fate will be *cues drum roll* Great work Smile

Art at its best.
