Emma and the Deer by chibi
“Emma” involves several themes that have surfaced in my work over the years, primarily the idea that there is magic and mystery to be found in the woods. As a child, I sometimes dreamt of having a friend in a large, frightening animal that would defend me so I could go to school unafraid or even do things I could not otherwise do, such as wander through the woods alone. Secondly, the idea of safety in friends emerges. The world can be a frightening place for children, especially for young girls. Lastly, Emma is exploring the forest on her own and experiencing the joy of discovery. Today, children are typically forbidden to go out and explore by themselves, and I wonder what kind of magic and joy is being missed because of this.
