Artwork Description

This charcoal drawing is a full-scale reinterpretation of Diego Velasquez's monumental oil painting Las Meninas, in which every historical personage from 17th century Spain has been replaced with a character from Lois McMaster Bujold's fantasy novel _The Curse_of_Chalion_ and the viewpoint has been rotated to mirror that of the original image, with the castle steward (now the viewer) in a distant doorway of Velasquez's space being implicitly replaced by Bujold's hero Cazaril. I replaced Velasquez himself with an anachronisticlaly attired self portrait. For more on this project see http://students.risd.edu/yr2006/jbruesse/web/chalion.htm
