Artwork Description

Although more legend than fantasy, I would suppose that the inspiration for most of our heroes is drawn from our own historical mythology (this statue of William Wallace stands in Aberdeen, Scotland)

This is Brilliant!!

Hi dear guest, well I would think this was nearer the mark than Mel Gibsons portrayal in "Braveheart" the sculpter of this original statue based most of the clothing and armour around old illustrations and what was believed to be worn by medieval knights of 13th century Britain....contrary to popular belief, the kilt or braid was not worn by many fighting scotsmen way back then!!!

Is this what William Wallace actualy looked like?

somerset's picture

Heh heh thank you so much, dear Guest Smile

James, Great color work. James

Ha ha, typical of a woman to prefer Mel, Karen, and you are right the real man was tall compared to shorty Mel, LOL! thanks for the nice words

Hi Jamie, Good depiction of Wallace, he was a hulk of a man, nearer 7ft tall I hear and a brute of a man. You have captured him well in this picture. (But Mel Gibson in a Kilt, well what can I say). Keep up the good work, and no I cant believe your still collecting comics...lol

Thank you, Rita! Ja, I agree I wasn't quite sure how this one was going to turn out, being used to living subjects! still it turned out ok in the end!

Jep, Jamie, I have to agree to all these comments: WONDERFUL work. I think it is hard to paint/draw a Statue because of the colors! But as always, good job! Keep on Jamie XO

You have got to see the real thing, Uwe! I myself being a Scotsman, certainly get a massive feeling of patriotic pride viewing this awesome monument! in my opinion this transcedes creed and religion for our most perfect idea of heroic standard!

Ah! a Fifer! thanks Sharon, for the lovely comments, I did use photo references for this one, cause as you know, it's far too cold most of the time up in Scotland to stand about outside! lol! as for your work,PLEASE keep trying, a few of my early attempts where rejected too! us Scots never give up you know! keep well!

Guest's picture

I too am from Scotland. (Fife) This is a great picture! Shock) Did you stand in front of the statue with your sketchpad or did you look at photos for reference? Shock) It must've taken ages however you did it! I don't think Epilogue likes me,I tried to put my artwork on here but it all got rejected. Shock( Anyway, keep up the good work! I like the fairy tale ones too, it's nice to see how others view story characters. Take care. From, Sharon.

I simply love this picture, Mr. McPartlin. William Wallace is one of my greatest heroes and this picture undeniably captures the true essence of that monument (I'm mostly Scottish myself, so I've seen it many a time visiting relatives) Again, I simply love it.

I love the coloring and the mood in this piece. Even though it is a statue it almost breathes life...it is an ironic attribute to an infamous life. Great job in capturing the mood. Cheers

Thanks for your kind input, Per!
