Artwork Description

10 x 23 cm (graphite, oil & digitally graded)

"When the storm breaks, each man acts in
accordance with his own nature. Some are
numb with terror, some flee, some hide,
and some spread their wings like eagles
and soar on the wind..." - Dr. John Dee

An early attempt at the fantasy-genre, from 2003. At that time, it felt obvious that I should limit this first attempt with a shadow-light play. I remember the cheer joy I felt while I was working on this. At times, the excitement had me almost falling off the chair. Happy with the final result, this became my doorstep into the world of fantasy art.

The motif itself, isnt anything special. Just the old cliché with the protagonist facing the impossible odds (maybe I should have made the opposing force more obvious for the viewer too see). Lesson learned.

Your use of silhouettes against the bright sky is awesome... It really sets up a great atmosphere for your message. His pose makes him look very powerful, and those lightening-like bolts he is producing from his hands are a great touch.... Awesome work!

great image Robert, I really like the feeling of distance, and the muted colour scheme.

Art at its best.
