Artwork Description

Another illustration for Call of Cthulhu. This one shows Azathoth himself, the greatest and most terrible of all the gods of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, so I wanted to do something really scary with lots of tentacles and stuff. Hope it worked somehow to do Azathoth at least a little justice. A step by step tutorial of this piece will appear in Martin McKenna’s digital horror painting workshop which will be out late summer 2006.

And here is a link to a close-up to anyone who is interested:

Awesome image! Did Azathoth generate the nuclear blast with its mouth, or was it aimed at it by its victims in a futile attempt to defend their world against its monstrous powers of destruction?

That's an awesome image! Is Az generating that nuclear blast with its mouth or was the blast aimed at Az by its victims in a futile attempt to defend themselves?

One day I was walking in the middle of the night
And Azathoth appeared from the clouds and gave me a fright
He thrust a tenticle through me with all of his might
And said "thats what you get for shoes that are white"

This is a fantastic piece, Uwe. I have always been a fan of H.P. Lovecraft, and you really capture the feel of his weird and wonderful world. I look forward to the book containing the tutorial.

Aha, so you are this one visitor at my site Smile – hehe. No I don’t think I will post the tutorial online, at least not before the book is out, maybe than someday. But I sure will do some other if time permits.

Yes she did, well that’s the sad thing about those high heels, they just won’t stay at your feet when a monster tentacle catches you Smile).
Thanks for commenting my friend!

Its always so much fun to hear from artists that I admire so much that my work inspires somehow, so we inspire each other Smile - great thing. It is fantastic to be under all you wonderful people. Thanks for your very nice words my friend!

Hi Christine, yes there really some detail in this piece. Sadly I mostly don’t know when to stop and tend to overdo my pieces. I really have to learn how it works to do more detail in the points of interest and less in the lesser important regions of a painting, at least this would safe me a lot of time Wink. So it’s really great to hear you like the lots of detail in this piece Smile.
Thanks for the nice comment, really much appreciated!
