Artwork Description

This is an illustration for a short story of the same name. The story is from a planned 'suite' of four stories all set in different parts of the same fictional continent - Shymeria - and representing each of the four seasons. Wolfwind is the winter story, set in the harsh northern country of Iryleer, a tale of redemption after loneliness and long estrangement. The original spark for the story was a desire to write a werewolf story where the werewolf was the 'hero'. This led to the human population being peripheral at best and the story becoming a tale of small-scale 'werewolf politics' if you like. I have always been fascinated, too, with the 'outsider' the individual who, for whatever reason, doesn't fit in, and Averyl, the central character depicted here, being an outcast in two societies, fits that description exactly.

Thank you Stina. I'm very pleased you liked the story.

Beautiful! The fur is incredible well done, the character is. But most of all I like her expression. I think I've never experenced a sad werewolf before. Wonderful.
I also think your story is very good.

Thanks Kyri! Your comment is especially welcome, coming from someone whose own work is so wonderful. 'Orcs' is an incredible piece.

This absolutely stunning work Jon! I love the emotion you got into the characters face, fantastic lighting and mood, really excellent stuff.

Thanks very much, Simon. And your comments on GFX were, as always, extremely helpful and pertinent - they're stored away for future reference! I'm really glad you liked this one - your own gallery is a regular stop for me - 'I love my Fschz' is one of my favourite paintings ever! And anyone who puts a pangolin into a painting is OK with me!

Great work, well composed and very detailed. I commented on this on GFX - nice job.

Short, sweet, and much appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you so much, Uwe. Though I confess to being astonished at your comment about why you don't comment in the WIP threads! Your art is absolutely wonderful - I remember seeing a picture of yours a while ago (I think it was 'Wild Hare') and just being so amazed and delighted at the range of your gallery. I've been a fan ever since - though, to my shame, I'm not a great commenter Sad I'm touched and delighted that you liked this. Thank you.

Thank you very much, James. Your comment is much appreciated, coming from someone whose own delicate and beautiful work I've admired for some time.

Special thanks to you Kay. Your crits and excellent suggestions in the WIP section were hugely helpful.

Many thanks! I spent such a long time on that expression - I was after a lonely, sad reflectiveness rather than just unhappiness. Thanks for noticing.

Jon – this is really a great piece, I already saw it in the WIP section and I knew this will be a winner (sorry I don’t comment in the WIP section cause I don’t feel good enough to give other artists any helpful critiques) – But as said I thought it will be a winner and it is!! Congrats to a wonderful work of fantastic art!

This is so marvelous Jon. The rendering and lighting is 'Gasp'
A well deserved Editors Pick and an inspiration.

The hair is beautiful and the expression is so sad. What a wonderful painting!

Thank you Rita. A bit further along in the transformation and she might look like the beautiful wolf in your 'Merlin' picture!
