I just remember I signed this piece with the date on it - about the only picture I've ever done that with, so yes it was definitely painted in 1987. Out of curiosity I'd be interested to see the image you're referring to if you might be able to scan it, or failing that a list of magazines and dates where you saw the same image.
Thank you for the insult. I have the original sitting here at home (you're more than welcome to buy it). I put the copyright date as an estimate but I actually don't remember exactly when I painted it. I did the piece as a sample for Sarah Brown Agency, London and I received payment for publishing rights for a book cover in Europe somewhere. If it was re-used in other magazines elsewhere then it was without my knowledge or permission, and would not be the first time that's happened.
On the other hand perhaps there was some some picture that you saw that's very similar, but this is certainly no copy of anything I've ever seen. If you somehow think this kind of painting is "beyond my means" then I suggest you take a look at my other art and judge for yourself. www.rolfmohr.com
I know that this has been copyright in 1987, but I have seen this same picture in fantasy magazines long before 87. While it looks hand done, it is a handdone copy of another picture.
Thanks much to both of you - high prais indeed!
Yes, I was definitely trying to emulate the "fantasy masters" - and as one other person observed correctly I was also influenced by Richard Corben.
Very reminesent of the fantasy masters.
This is great. Well rendered characters in a classic fantasy style reminiscent of Vallejo, Frazetta, Kelly & others of the genre. This reminds me of all the great art I grew up with. fantastic work Rolf.
