Artwork Description

private work done in collaboration with an Icelandic author who has written a fantastic novel. We were just trying to set the mood with this, the background although out of my head was based on the descriptions the author gave me of the setting in Iceland whether novel takes place. I must admit I have a bit of a soft spot for werewolfs so this was a pleasure to paint. Hope you like it and thank you for your visit.

I do not mean to offend, but when I saw this I laughed, I could just imagine a big fat were-walrus chasing me around during a full moon.

hi, i am a new artist and am just getting started i love your background and was wondering if you have any tips for starting background work on a drawing (and,or) painting. i usually draw mythical beasts of some sort from unicorns to werewolves, but i can't seem to put a background to them...

Thank you so much for your kind words.

Very nice. I think my favorite thing about your work is your positioning and use of light and shadow. I like how the werewolf's back arches in a way reminiscent of the clouds over the moon. V. Nice -Essie

apart from repeating all of the other compliments, all i can say is that it's really, really...cute.
maybe that's just me.

I love the steam coming of the carcass...it adds to the total feel of the painting.

I've got to comment on this pic, wow, just wow, I love everything about the image, truly mesmerising. Love the cold colour palette you've chosen, this scene is simply inspiring.

Great work Smile

WOW! thankyou!

best lighting ive ever seen used

I really like your color choice. And unlike most were-wolf paintings, even though you can't see any blood or gore, you still did a good job at pulling off a haunting, cold feeling.

Niiiiiiiiiiice!

This is very impressive and beautiful work, Matt

thank you Pierre, I'm really on cloud 9 with all the great comments this piece has received. I can't really take much credit for the actual idea behind the werewolf and setting as this is straight from the mind of the author I am working with. I will definitely make sure he gets to read these comments, as I'm sure he will be as thrilled as I am with them. Thank you again my friend.

What can I add to these great (and well-deserved) compliments you already received ? This is definitely one of my favorite of yours. The snow werewolf is really an unexpected way of dealing with a highly classical theme. A real breeze of fresh air ! And I too love werewolves ! Smile

thank you so much Malcolm

Wow, thank you Marley, inspiration is the one thing I don't mind being smacked in the face with that's for sure! I wish it would beat me up a little more sometimes!!!!

thank you my friend, mood in a painting is always something which I try to achieve, but it is always somehow elusive. I'm very pleased that it appears to be working in this case.

thank you Scott, you know it's funny, sometimes you can try your hardest to make something look creepy and it just doesn't come together. I was very lucky this time round and things just seemed to happen as I was painting. Cheers Scott.

thank you for saying that, that's exactly what I hoped the viewer would feel. Wink

hi Rita, you know how I love my backgrounds. And I think it was Martin McKenna (hope I spelt that right) who said "when in doubt, glowing eyes." Its very true!

mattbradbury's picture

thanks James, Iceland has a very unique feel in some of its landscapes and is a perfect setting for this sort of image. Thanks for your comment my friend.

WOW! Now THAT is how to create some drama and atmosphere in a painting! As much as that fantastic night setting draws me into this scene those glowing eyes just creep me out in a big way! Fantastic painting Matt! Smile
