Artwork Description

This is definitely more my sort of subject compare to the last painting I did. I really wanted it to seem exportable. The image itself has been sitting on my hard drive for some time and evolved a little more each time I went back to it. I was tempted to call it finished a couple of days back but kept hold of it, fiddling with the details and textures. For me now, there is more pleasure in just looking at it than doing any more painting, so I guess it's finished! Hope you like it, thanks for looking.

Defintely a change to the fairy! Wink

The atmosphere here is stunning. Great lighting. It looks damp and real.

Hey Malcolm, thank you! As I said in my description this was something I worked on for a while. I've started to do more very quick sketches, they are pretty rubbish for the most part. I have quite a few now hanging around and when I find myself with a little spare time I go through them looking for something that might catch my eye. There's nothing worse than having the time to paint whatever you want and not a single idea in your head. Thanks again for your comment!

There were a number of times when I started to question the detail I was painting, too much of it all over the place can become a confusing mess!!! I'm really pleased you get a sense of a story because I really wanted that feeling to come across. Thank you so much for your kind words.

Hi Pierre,

Thank you so much for your comment. I do get a big kick out of lighting a painting. More so from secondary light sources than the main source. Many of my paintings are fairly dark so you need some way to define what you want people to see. I know I break a few rules here and there but hopefully not in a way that set off too many alarm bells in the viewer. I think, it's a little like lighting a movie set to get the best out of a shot. Cheers my friend!

Brilliant picture, Matthew! Wonderful use of lighting, atmosphere, colour and texture, and so much detail. Definitely one of your very best.

A most impressive piece ! I admire your way of playing with multi-source lighting.

Wow, you've got so many details here that point to some strange story, making me wonder what happened here. Love the giant spider and little dinosaur!

Art at its best.
