This piece is a painting of Haile Selassie, born July 23, 1892 in Ejarsa Goro, Ethiopia. He was pronounced king of kings, lord of lords, conquering lion of the tribe of Judah. He is certainly known to be the last king of the Solomonic dynasty.
Haile Selassie secured peace, improvement of civilization, and advancement in the standard of living. In the painting, his military uniform in dusky orange, symbolizes the determination to defend his country. The dark black background recedes while emerging in the shadows of his forehead. His bulging eyes stares off to one side looking with focus in to the distance, displaying fearlessness, courage, determination, and justice.
As his skin illuminates when hit by the light, you can clearly see the muscle and bone in his cheeks, as it exposes his strength. The main idea is to represent the essential dignity of the subject, bringing out inspiration with his face as the focal point.
