"Llywelyn turned the crown in his hands. "A king by the Grace of Corman", he said bitterly. "And if any Cormish king ever decides I'm not behaving in the way I was supposed to - then what?"
Aidan shrugged. "He'll try to express his displeasure. And then he'll learn something that I found out years ago."
"What's that?" Llywelyn said, irritably.
"That it's pretty damn impossible to make you behave in any way you don't want to behave."
"You make it sound easy," Llywelyn murmured.
Aidan sighed. "I won't deny it won't be easy. Corman put you on the throne because they think you'll be easy to control, and they will try to control you. But you're not alone. You've got allies - the best cadfridoc a king could wish for -"
"And the best councillor a king could wish for," Llywelyn said with a slight smile.
Aidan's face remained dark. "There's only one bit of advice this one councillor is ever going to give you. I may alter it from time to time to fit the circumstances, but the message will always be the same.
Keep that throne."" |
