Danny Staten 2002-11-14 Sweet Idea I like this piece a lot. I am also in the exhibit in Italy, though I was surprised out of my mind when they invited me to be in it. Nice piece.   (April Lee) Heh. Yeah, it was a surprise to me to get contacted for the exhibition, too. I suppose someone really did a big internet search for Tolkien art or something! I have no idea how I managed to come up with that idea... Just some weird aberration! -- But lighting, on the other hand, I've always loved underlighting. I use it more than I should, I think! Also, the expression on Eowyn's face is just perfect. I wonder if you used a model or just knew what would be right? Well, this piece has a really nice drama to it. And there's no such thing as too much underlighting so stop that silly talk. ;) Cheers to ya.   (April Lee) Thanks for your comments! I didn't use a model for any of these. I'm not sure why... I guess I just wasn't in the mood to use much photo-ref when I was working on that painting...! I have read the books so often I had a bit of my own idea of how I thought they should look. But surprisingly, what I see in my head when I read books and what appears on paper when I actually try to draw the characters is totally different! You'd think as an artist it'd be easier to clearly visualize a character and then just put it down on paper, but for some reason, it never works that way for me...
