Lovely! I like this illustration so much!
The colours are great and I love his bow and the background a lot!
There's a very classical mood in this one!
I like your art!

Thanks. I'd like to paint even more classically... but I need to get art for card games done in only a few days or less. But I try... :(

Congratulations, you are the absolutely best. Today this is THE ONLY color picture! Epilogue.net seems to become black and white. Thus every color painting (especially so skilfuly made with a real brush) is rare and wonderful work of art. Thank you! Color forever! |
| (April Lee) |
The only color piece? whoo-hoo! score! I love working in color. Frankly, I don't have the graphic sensibility to do great black and white art. Color can easily over-shadow black and white--but there is a skill in great b&w work that can be truly breath-taking. I certainly admire it. As for painting with a traditional brush... it does seem to be more and more a lost art. Frankly, I do it because I started painting and working before paint programs were much good and before companies started accepting digital work. It's a good skill to have, though. I still like having the orignal to sell. Although being able to fix things digitally is VERY nice!!!

Rowr, baby! Could you call it, or what?? Gotta love a many with a bow... |

... I could paint elves all day and all night and never get tired of it! :)

April, wonderful color scheme. Nice job of having darks and shadows flow throughout the composition. |
| (April Lee) |
Thanks, Stan. I still haven't really got a handle on night scenes. I just totally fake the lighting and hope it reads OK. This piece was done a while ago. It was one of the first pieces of Middle Earth art that I was half-way happy with. I can see plenty of faults, but I'm glad they are outweighed by what does work!

Wow, he's hot alright :D
I love the blue sky, that just brings the whole picture together.
His right arm doesn't look right though..there doesn't seem to be enough depth to it, or something, I can't quite put my finger on it. |
| (April Lee) |
The pose and the right arm in particular is pretty iffy, I agree! I can't quite figure out what to do with it either... I can tinker with it digitally, but the painting is long sold (in the collection of Diana Stein). So it's far too late to fix, even if I did know.

I was SO happy when I got that assignment! I definitely EXIST to paint pretty elf boys!!! And to look at 'em too. Can't wait to see Two Towers again... *sigh* Legolas... Aragorn... so many nice things to look at!!! :)

Wow. Wonderful pic. I like especially the material of his dress, and the bow's texture. You are great April!:) |
| (April Lee) |
Hi, Liptak! I hope you're doing well. Thanks for the nice comments. This is an older piece and I think I've improved a bit, but I'm glad it's still looking OK. It's got a bit more line-work in it (such as on the bow) than I usually have in a painting.

This is lovely. The atmosphere is very well depicted, and that bow is amazing. If I may offer one small critique.. his right arm looks a bit strange. The angle seems to be correct, but it looks like it's too far forward or something. I found a reference to show what I mean:
http://www.atarn.org/chinese/images/ARCHER.GIF
Anyway, that's just my two cents :). I love your work. |
| (April Lee) |
Thanks--but my excuse is that he's not done drawing his bow. ;) I know the hand should go somewhere by the jaw when fully drawn... But there IS something weird about the arm... It's always bugged me a bit... maybe need the highlights and planes more defined... hmmm... Anyway--thanks for the ref! Those are always fun to see. Although I usually prefer to go by European archery styles, for European-ish medieval-ish settings. Sometimes Asian archers pull with the arrow knocked to the opposite side of the bow, which always seems weird to me...

April Lee Yeah! I really like this one(I like them all), brilliant colours and wonderful details, your use of acrylic is masterful |

Excellent art work April Lee,I really like how you put two arrows in one hand, it shows the character to be the elite bowsman he is supposed to be, great job... |
| (April Lee) |
Putting the two arrows in Legolas's hands was not my idea. I did this image for the old Middle Earth card game, and they asked me to have him hold two arrows, to show how quick he was. I'm glad you noticed that detail, though!

Great colours I like the colours you've chosen here, and the whole scene is very dark and moody - fitting the battle climate. I like his clothes, you've done a great job! |

wow, done well before the films?.you have incredible forsight.ive never read the book but judging by the movie.you have a very accurate vision.i love the detailing on legolas' clothing
|
| (April Lee) |
Marley--you really should try and read the books if you like the films. Peter Jackson and the entire crew of the film tried to be true to the books, which is why it wasn't hard for many artists to come close to the look portrayed on film. Tolkien had a lot of vivid descriptions in the book, and set the scenes in great detail.

painted before the film!! You must be psychic the mood is wonderful and his hair is beautiful. I came to your site hoping to see a night picture amongst your art and I was awarded doubly!
This is a brilliant example of how a night picture should be painted and helpful for me.
And for a change an elf that doesn't need to show his pointed ears to show that he is an elf. |

Excellent, excellent work. Just spent a while looking through nearly all of the images in your gallery, and I just wanted to say that I really love how you use colours... and you have a very goog grasp on anatomy. Most of all, perhaps, I enjoy how you paint hair - and faces. Splendid :] |

This is amazing! I love the colouring, and this is a lot like how I imagined Legolas. The only thing I can comment on is that I don't think he is pulling the bow back far enough, it's supposed to be pulled to the jaw, unless he is in the process of doing this. Anyways absolutely fantastic picture, beautiful! |
| (April Lee) |
Legolas is in the act of drawing his bow (I've done some archery, which helps). But really--it's my fault for not making the pose read better. Art needs to speak for itself, after all. Thanks for your comments! :)
