Great piece Patrick. The last few pieces you added to your gallery are truly impressive. Now, as for illustrating Lovecraft ... I really think it is an impossible task. I have never seen any illustration by the even the best illustrators that would even remotely gives me the same impression as Lovecraft's descriptions. It is because Lovecraft's creatures (or rather Gods, for most of them) are clearly presented as beings that the human brain cannot even remotely begin to comprehend. And that very characteristic is what makes them so frightening. Some critics, speaking of Lovecraft's horror, used the term "metaphysical horror". Horror born of situations where the characters' confrontation with something unknown and impossible to comprehend suddenly lead them to understand that their very existence is just an absurd and pointless twist of fate. Very frightening indeed. I do not think anyone can really express such ideas visually. So there is still work for writters it seems, despite our society becoming more and more visually-oriented ! Great work anyway Patrick, again. |

Thanks! It is always a bit dauting to do a Lovecraft creature, because so many of them are described as being so horrible as to drive men insane with the merest glimpse - or as being completely indescribable! So we do our best... It's quite a challenge, but fun.

having had the distinct pleasure of seeing both, i would say they are each very cool in their own way. didn't i spill beer on the oil version (murky memories randomly surfacing....)?! |
| (Patrick McEvoy) |
Hmm... I think I remember that - wasn't it right after I spewed on all of your prints? I think that's what the paramedics told me, at least...

Chris Shepard 10-22-2005 Yah, its me, Chris. Thanks for your response! I love artists who respond to comments. I am doing alright except for the hurricane that's about to hit me here in southwest Florida, heh heh. Otherwise, I should be getting my general AA degree from my local community college, and afterwards I will finally be able pursue a BA in illustration! Take care, and wish Florida luck. ;) |

Hi Chris. I enjoy responding, if people are nice enough to leave me a message! Good luck with the weather and school!

I really like this one (ofcourse I would). I like the sense of size of the "Ithaqua" creature...This is conveyed through lighting from the bottom upwards? And those tatters are fantastic. I love tatters! And gore, for that matter! And eerie white eyes! I enjoy how the light of its eyes is rather hazy, and you can see subtle reflection on the chest underneath. |

Thanks! It's always nice to know people see all the little touches. :) And I love those tatters, too.
