Well I wanted to start a project that would push me. The problem came with 1. How can I challenge myself
2.What can I fully commit to.
Since I work as a full time designer my schedule can be a bit daunting and full. So I thought well I can at least do one picture a week. So then I thought what can challenge me. Well a set theme within a set time frame. It forces me to think creatively (how does one take a set idea and still make something exciting from it.) Then being contained within a time frame forces me to work faster to get the idea down.
Edit:
So here are the 52 themes, each theme will be done in about 52 minutes or less. Will try not to go over by much. Will try to stay somewhat consecutive, but may skip around. But I won't skip from 3 to 42 without there being other steps in between. I will also probably be doing several of each step so the end product of this project is that there will be at least 52 images but most likely a lot more.

2. Perspective

ok, so now I'm thinking I'm going to have to do something like this. But... since I need portfolio work I've got to spend more than 52 minutes and I'll be doing less work. Still- Ed- you're the man. I need structure to my life .
Haha. But really, Ed... good idea. How did you come up with your themes? If I do a bunch of themes I fear I'll cheat and just come up with themes I really want to paint. _________________ "Death is but a door, time is but a window. I'll be back!"

I started 100 images challenge once and erm.... did one image so far (now deleted from web). But there is no deadline If you need more themes, the challenge description with all 100 ideas is here. _________________ Portfolio www.Sirielle.com

quigleyer - well I started off with general grouping (basics, people, materials, nature, animals). Then I wanted to incorporate the previous weeks general into newer areas which is how the next 30 topics came about. They are things that I want to do, but I also felt what challenge would it be if I only did what I wanted. So I tossed in some things that I don't particularly like or have never drawn before. The kicker is going to be the end ones, not so much the self portrait but the Master copy and the Trompe L'oiel in 52 minutes.
Sirielle - Yeah that 100 has some really good topics in it. If I get a good flow with this I might add something like that with less of a restriction.
So here is the first one. Not to exciting, but it builds some skills and shows me a lot in how my skills have weaken. I think I probably could do it stronger in regular charcoal or graphite than digitally. Might give this a go again tomorrow. I used the charcoal tool in Painter IX.

Ed- that's awesome you're following through with this. I actually came back to check on your list to start creating one of my own and saw you already did something.
I don't mean to butt in or put my opinion where it's not wanted, so please just tell me if you don't want me to respond to these when I see them and I'll oblige. But, if you don't mind:
Looking at your geometrical still life- I'm fairly sure about the light source- I'm guessing above and to the left (from our point of view). I got this from the general light shape of the objects, mostly the sphere and two cylinders. The thing that throws this off is the dark plane of the cube- it's value reached far below that of any shadow that you have in the still life, save for the REALLY small areas- turning points of your rounded objects where the light now longer hits the object directly, and no reflected light hits either, which works pretty well for your rounded objects.
Now I understand this plane to be facing away from the light, and you did right to make it a dark local value, but it's lost a sense of placement or context in the image without any reflected light. At the very least I believe the side of your cone receiving light would reflect at least a 7 (value scale (light)1-10(dark) being the reference for that comment) on to that cube's plane..
I also think you might have misplaced cast shadows, but those are tricky at times.
That's my opinion on that... good job on honing your skills- really motivating to me to see you do this. _________________ "Death is but a door, time is but a window. I'll be back!"

Yes I do want people to comment. I need to challenge myself. I've been getting so lazy with my art that I feel I need to in essence "start over." I agree about the value and shadows, which is why I want to do this one again. The cube was the first object I did... but as my time started to run out I couldn't go back and adjust the value. The shadows definitely are off. This one although in somewhat perspective, the shadows were not done properly with perspective.
So I'm going to do this one again. 52 minutes isn't much time, but I realized after doing this one, that I can do several of these. So I'm pretty excited about it.
Thank you for the comments much appreciated. _________________ hello, my name is ed, and I design things.

Changing the rules a bit. After doing 2 of them I realize how little time 52 minutes actually is. So I'm just going to go through the themes at a quicker pace instead of once a week. I'll just keep doing a theme until I'm ready to move on. So there could be several of one theme. Still in the 52 minute time frame though.
So perspective. Which was pretty easy. At first I didn't know how to fill the 52 minutes then I started to play around with the gradients. Then I realized I wanted to do a shadow study but then ran out of time heh.

02 Perspective 1-point (Painter)
So here is a 1-point shadow study. This wasn't exactly 52 minutes more like 42. _________________ hello, my name is ed, and I design things.

02 Perspective 2-point (Photoshop)
Ok so as to not cheat out the time. I did this up really quick in photoshop in 10 minutes. So 2 perspectives in 52 minutes.
Also because I was really looking at the list. I realized that foreshortening is just perspective. I might knocked that one out and replace with something else. _________________ hello, my name is ed, and I design things.

02 Perspective 1-point Value Study (Painter - 30 minute study)
Changing the rules again, not going to constrict to the 52 minute time frame. Might be less I will try not to go too far over 52 minutes though. Also won't be going in exact order... but I won't skip from like 3 to 42 either. _________________ hello, my name is ed, and I design things.
