Introduction

What is #epilogue?
#epilogue is the official chat room for Epilogue. #epilogue is an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) channel hosted on the Starchat network.

How I can access #epilogue?
#epilogue is a public IRC channel and there are two methods of accessing it. You can use an IRC client program such as mIRC to connect to channel #epilogue on irc.starchat.net. Alternatively, you can use Epilogue's java chat client (jirc) that will do this for you automatically. Just select a nickname (nick) and connect.

Using The Channel

How do I use the jirc java chat client?
From the main chat page, click on the Join Epilogue Chat button. The chat room will load in a pop up window. Enter your name and a nickname. Then, simply type your message in the text area and press Enter/Return to submit. You can private chat with other people by double clicking on their name in the user list.
*Note that opening a private window just to say something that could be said in the public channel, such as a greeting, can annoy people.

How do I change my nick?
To change your nickname, type "/nick nickname" and press enter. For example, to change your nick to Harold, you would type this:
/nick Harold
*Note: IRC does not allow spaces or certain characters in nicknames. There is a character limit of 30.

I've seen people describing actions such as "*Tumbleweed writes an #epilogue FAQ", how do I do this?
To describe actions, use the /me command like this:
/me writes an #epilogue FAQ

My nick is being changed to 'guest2421' or similar.
Starchat is a large IRC network and has a service called nickserv which allows users to register nicknames. Because of this, many popular names are already taken. If this is happening, simply change your nick to something else.

Help, I can't enter the channel because I'm getting a message saying that I'm banned!
If this is happening and you feel it is in error, it is likely that you are being effected by a ban placed on another user with a similar connection near you. Use the Epilogue contact form to let us know.

What is the Epilogue-Bot?
The Epilogue-Bot is a notorious ladies man and fearsome drinker, but for the most part it serves to display who is currently in the channel on the main Chat page. He isn't a real person, so you if you talk to him it will be a one-sided conversation!
*Note that sometimes the user listing can be inaccurate because the Bot is on hiatus.

Conduct

One of the moderators told me to do or stop doing something, where do they get off?!
Anyone with an '@' next to their name is a channel operator (moderator). If they are asking to you change your behavior, it is probably because you are breaking one of the #epilogue rules. They have the power to remove from the channel temporarily or even permanently if your behavior continues to be disruptive.

What behavior is expected in #epilogue?
The same rules and guidelines for professionalism that affect the rest of Epilogue are expected to be observed in the chat room. All users of #epilogue are expected to be courteous to each other. Offensive language and inappropriate discussions are not permitted. Any harassment of other users will be dealt with severely. Simply put, follow the same standards that you would in a face-to-face conversation. If you are having problems with a user, inform an operator or contact Epilogue directly and we will attempt to resolve the problem. Include logs of the incident if you can.

What do people talk about in #epilogue?
The chat room is for Epilogue members to discuss art and all things related to art. While the central topic is art, we don't enforce an "art conversations only" rule during open chat. However, during officially scheduled chats, on-topic conversation is required. Private discussions should be kept to private chats and not held in the main chat window since it can be distracting for the rest of the chatters.

What language and standard of grammar is expected in #epilogue?
English is the language used in #epilogue and it is expected that all users attempts it to the best of their ability. Overuse of internet speech (AOLism/l33t) and ALL CAPS is frowned upon. You will be taken more seriously if you avoid these abbreviations and dialects.

My English isn't so good, am I welcome?
Of course! Even if your English isn't the best, you are still welcome in #epilogue. Just say that you are having trouble so we all know to be extra patient. There might even be someone who speaks your native language in the channel who can help you.
